Imagine going on vacation to relax in a vacation home, but the people who own it tell you to do everything yourself, even though you paid them to clean. This has been going on at Airbnb for a few months, and social media are finally talking about it. People who have had bad service as a guest have many different stories to tell, but there is one thing they can all agree on. What Airbnb has to offer doesn’t appeal to them.
Airbnb is a great example of what a company shouldn’t do because they don’t care much about how their customers feel. The problem with Airbnb is that the customer has to clean the house, mow the lawn, take out the trash, do the laundry, and wash the dishes. In the end, the customer will still have to pay the Airbnb host for staying and cleaning. This is the same as hiring a house-sitter who will pay you to take care of your house.
The Outrage on Social Media
Even though the guests pay a cleaning fee, Airbnb gives them a list of things to do like cleaning, laundry, etc., as part of the chores. In the Hotel and Apartment Rental industries, these chores are done for free by the staff. Travelers are complaining on Reddit, Twitter, and even TikTok. They are upset because they already paid a cleaning fee, so they don’t understand why they should clean.

Even if you pay the cleaning fee and clean the Airbnb apartment thoroughly, if you miss one spot, the host will give you a bad review and charge you through Airbnb for not following house rules. This extortion is getting the most attention because many Airbnb hosts don’t even have the right tools to clean. In the United States, tourists are choosing hotels over Airbnb because of the cleaning fees. The same can’t be said about Airbnb in other countries, where cleaning fees are only $10–20 and there aren’t many tasks to do.
